Any user familiar with Windows disk administration tools can easily install and manage Melio. An installation on a small SAN can be done in 15 minutes. The only requirements for installation are Windows 2003 R2, 2008, or 2008 R2 servers, iSCSI or Fibre Channel storage, and a TCP/IP network between the servers for lock traffic.
Melio FS was initially designed for very large scale clustered processing and file serving in telecom network operation centers. Its architecture is designed to support high availability computing, application scale-out using shared-data server clusters, and fast access to both small and large files. Melio FS incorporates multi-layer distributed locking mechanisms and advanced transaction managers, which provide performance, stability and reliability in very large storage environments. The symmetrical architecture, and advanced dynamic clustering capability provide both tremendous flexibility and reliability.
Melio incorporates Quality of Service management, so access to storage for specific servers can be given priority in storage-bandwidth constrained environments. Melio also provides reporting on I/O and transaction performance, which can be very useful in applications such as server virtualization that have a dependency on storage performance. Melio also includes distributed snapshot capability that can be used with any backup product utilizing a VSS client.

Melio Component Summary
- Shared access to data on SAN storage from multiple servers
- Fully utilizes the performance of any industry standard iSCSI or FC storage and storage networking
- Software only solution that is simple to install and manage
- Inherent redundancy—if a server fails, another server can access the data the failed server was using and continue running the application.
- In server virtualization deployments Melio can be used to store all virtual machine files on a single LUN accessible to all hosts, AND to provide shared access to application data from guest servers
- Distributed snapshot capability uses a standard VSS provide and provides flexible options for data backup
- Flexibility-all servers can be given access to all data, allowing storage and compute resources to be quickly reassigned among projects - No more storage-server “silos” with low utilization.
- Provides Quality of Service Management as well as reporting on I/O and transaction performance.
- Many applications can grow by adding additional small cheap servers instead of moving to a larger, expensive server.
- Shared access to data for applications like web serving—all servers can directly access the most recent data—no need to make and manage multiple copies.
- Security—consistent security protocol that defines which users can access which data across the entire storage pool.
