The Problem

Managing, protecting and scaling file and web-serving environments presents an ever-increasing burden for enterprises large and small. Conventional approaches to deploying these workloads, such as those that rely on proprietary hardware-based file serving appliances, exasperate these issues and increase both capex and opex costs.

The Solution

Deploying file and web-serving workloads on a Windows Server platform using commodity server and storage hardware and Sanbolic Melio offers a flexible and scalable solution that enables centralized data management and protection, dynamic scale-out, high performance and enhanced fault-tolerance with significantly lower cost than solutions based on proprietary file-serving appliances.

Key Benefits

Sanbolic's Melio data management software delivers improved performance and increased scale for file and web-serving environments. Unlike expensive alternatives, Melio enables cost-effective scale-out of file and web-serving environments while maintaining high levels of performance and without increasing storage cost or complexity.

Key Features & Enhancements

  • Availability - File requests from network clients can be processed by any server in the cluster and file requests destined to a failed server can be redirected to another server to ensure continuous file-processing for maximum user productivity.
  • Performance - Storage resources can be aggregated to provide multiple gigabytes per second of throughput. Performance can be further enhanced by assigning SLAs to files and/or folders (QoS).
  • Scalability - Additional processors and memory can be installed in the servers (scale-up) and additional servers can be incorporated into the cluster (scale-out) dynamically to support ever-growing file and web-serving demands. Thanks to Melio's 64-bit symmetrical architecture, deployments can grow to thousands of servers and petabytes of storage.
  • Consolidation - Placing user files in file shares hosted on Melio shared storage allows the servers to process incoming file requests in tandem for a more efficient file-serving solution. Microsoft DFS or NLB can be used to fail over and/or load-balance file requests across the servers participating in the cluster while providing a single network address (DFS Namespace or virtual IP address) for the clients to access file shares. Alternatively, a hardware-based load-balancer may be placed in front of the file servers, allowing file requests to be distributed across all servers in the cluster for enhanced performance.
